Welcome

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting welcomed twenty-two New York City teens to the Summer Shakespeare program today. Forty-five student-artists applied for a limited number of spots to this free, five-week program for qualifying youth. Twenty-two teens were selected based on need, passion and enthusiasm. As Director of Outreach Carlos Caldart pointed out, “All of the applicants deserve to be commended for their courage to call, come for an interview and return for an audition.” Congratulations to all of those who were accepted and to those who had the courage to apply.

For the next five weeks students will undergo an intensive course of study and practice. Students will be in the rehearsal hall for fifty hours over five weeks in July and August. They will study voice and speech, Adler technique, physical acting, improvisation and Shakespearean scene study while rehearsing Julius Caesar. Carlos Caldart will oversee all classes and warm-ups while professional theater practitioner Heidi Mueller Smith will direct the play. The program ends on August 5th with a performance of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

This blog is devoted to tracking the learning and rehearsal process, student growth and progress. Students are especially encouraged to leave comments describing their experience in the program. Please check in on a weekly basis to see what the 2011 Summer Shakespeare ensemble is up to!

  1. My first week at Adler has been an exciting one. working with kids my age,who are dedicated, and share the same passion for the arts has shown me that i chose the right place to study and rehearse Shakespeare. I look foreword to growing more as classically trained actor, by tackling Shakespeare's Julius Caesar with a dedicated cast

  2. My first week of Stella Adler was superb, I just love the acting environment it makes me feel welcome and safe. I'm so glad there is a program out there for the youth to act and do what they love and I am so grateful. I love how we learn breathing and voice warmups that are helpful to our acting skills. I look toward to everyday I wake up and go to Stella.

  3. My first week at Stella Adler was awesome, I had a lot of fun in there, at the beginning(first days) i felt kinda shy and lonely but then, now, I'm feeling great and comfortable with kids, first week was really awesome. We had a lot of fun, we played games (that related to the Shakespeare-Julies Caesar). Most exciting one was on Wednesday which was breathing and voice warm ups. I'm so happy that I applied for the Stella Adler Summer Shakespeare Program and accepted to this program )) I think I will learn a lot of things about Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and other plays over the summer(in 4 weeks)

  4. What can i say.....the class is exciting, the teacher is great, and the cast of studens are even better. You get drawn in to working with everyone that the first week only felt like 2 days. I realy enjoyed being at Stella Adler "i mean" the level of personality is through the roof.

  5. Stella Adler is amazing. I love going in everyday and learning new things. We do breathing exercises and warm ups everyday. I am learning things I didn't know had anything to do with acting. The first day we got the play Julius Caesar I was scared because I thought I couldn't learn what the words meant in time. However, that week the director helped us break it down. I can honestly say I cam taking everything about Shakespeare in instead of giving up. Stella Adler means so much to me and I am grateful to have a place where I can learn how to be a better actor and person.

  9. My first week at Stella went a lot better than I expected. I thought that it would be tough trying to get along with people at first, but everyone was very inviting and comfortable with each other. I can't wait to continue my studies and learn more about acting!

  10. THIS WEEK HAS BEEN POPPIN!
I AM HAPPY TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUMMER PROGRAM.IT'S ONLY BEEN A WEEK, BUT I FEEL LIKE I LEARNED SO MUCH.I LEARNED ABOUT A PROCESS IN ACTING CALLED TABLE WORK. WHICH IS A THEATRICAL TERM, TO DESCRIBE THE BEGINNINGS OF REHEARSAL. WHICH IS, SITTING DOWN WITH YOUR CAST TO READ THROUGH THE PLAY. AND DISCUSS WITH EACH OTHER YOUR TRANSLATION OF THE PLAY.SHAKESPEARE HAS A VERY POWERFUL AFFECT TO THE AUDIENCE.THE LINES ARE VERY PASSIONATE AND COMES FROM THE HEART. AND EVERY LINE SEEMS TO HAVE A STORY BEHIND IT. AND THE CHARACTERS HAVE A NEED THAT STRONGLY AFFECTS THEIR LIFE.

  13. It's crazy how I can experience so much within one week. You would think that the first few days of getting to know a group of people you've never met before would be frightening, but in this case it wasn't. Acting together in the program has given us the opportunity to open up, as well as refraining from being judgmental. The next four weeks with our teachers, director, along with each other; I'm really looking forward to. The Stella Adler Studio is amazing. What else is there to say??

  17. Things have been going great. I did a really intense scene on tuesday and it completely helped me understnad my charecter more. It felt good to go to such an intense place and not hold back. On wednesday Steve White came in and thaught some combat training on how to kill Ceasar. We got to do it with real swords to understand the weight of it and how your body moves and then we did it with our hands. It was so cool. :D Stella has been fantastic as always and I'm learning everyday!

  18. Now that I am off book I realize how much I have grown and more importantly how much I can improve. I think when trying something new like Shakespeare, challaging roles like julies Ceaser are pivotal to my growth as an actor. I now understand why classically trained actors are some of the best in the world.I plan to start this next week making bolder choices and smarter stage decisions.

  19. It's crazy how much more into my character I feel this week. Being off book was a relief because I had time to focus on my movements as Cassius. I'm making more personal choices in the way I move rather than just following stage direction. I feel as though we are learning faster now than we were in the beginning because everything is getting so fast paced. Also, with the role of Cassius I have been working on being powerful. I have come to realize that I am stronger than I thought I was and am working on putting all that strength into Cassius. Can't wait for our performance!
